You've probably heard of some Chihuahuas being coined the term "Teacup". While many people may think they know what Teacup Chihuahuas are, the truth is they probably don't. However, after reading this article you should have a better understanding of them.

It is a common misconception that when someone refers to a Chihuahua as a Teacup Chihuahua, they are referring to the breed. This is not the case. In fact, the only official Chihuahua breeds recognized by any major association is the short-coat, and long-coat Chihuahua. As you might have guessed by the name, the short-coat Chihuahuas have a shorter coat of hair than the long-coat Chihuahuas.

So, you are probably asking yourself why so many people call Chihuahuas Teacup, Toy, or Miniature. Well, people call them terms like that for different reasons. Some people just call their Chihuahua a Teacup Chihuahua because they are small or tiny. However, breeders use these terms to try and add "value" to their Chihuahuas, so they can possibly sell them for more. If you see a breeder advertising that they are selling official "Teacup" Chihuahuas, you should avoid them. Oftentimes these breeders are breeding their Chihuahuas to become smaller and smaller, and labeling them as official Teacup Chihuahuas just so they can sell them for more. Remember, there are no official Teacup Chihuahuas, it's just a word used to describe a small Chihuahua.

There is nothing wrong with owning a Teacup Chihuahua. In fact, they can make some of the most wonderful pets. However, if you plan on owning one, there are a few things you should know:

  • Health - Above all, you want to be sure you have a healthy and happy Teacup Chihuahua. When you first get them, take them to the Vet for a checkup and their first sets of shots. You will have to periodically take them back for more shots
  • Hypoglycemia - Hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar, is a common health problem many Teacup Chihuahuas face. You can help prevent this by making sure your Teacup Chihuahua is fed throughout the day, not allowing too much time in between meals. Always consult with your Vet and see what the best method to approach this is.
  • Training - As with any indoor dog, you will have to train your Teacup Chihuahua to potty outside. This isn't as hard as many people may think. You can start by purchasing a crate for your Teacup Chihuahua to sleep in at night. This will keep them from having accidents at night, since they wont go potty where they have to sleep. During the day, take your Teacup Chihuahua outside to potty often, and give them a treat when they do. Before you know it, you will have a fully housebroken Teacup Chihuahua!
  • Socializing - This is something which is often overlooked by many Teacup Chihuahua owners, but shouldn't be forgotten. By Socializing your Teacup Chihuahua early you will help them grow to be more gentle around other people and animals. You can socialize your Teacup Chihuahua by taking them outside for walks around the neighborhood, taking trips with you while you run errands, go to a friends or families house, or just a trip to the pet store. As long as they are in contact with other people and animals, they will start to become used to them.
  • Chihuahua Clothes - Teacup Chihuahuas are extra small, and this means they will get colder during the winter season. You can help keep them warm by getting them some Chihuahua clothes for those cold times. Look for Chihuahua clothes that will be warm, comfortable, and stylish all at the same time. A good choice for the winter is a sweater. They are usually made semi thick, and should be the perfect choice for your tiny Teacup Chihuahua.

To pick up on your point about training your teacup chihuahua. It is possible to train small dogs such as the chihuahua to use a litter tray.

with the socialization you mention, above. You're right when you say a lot of chihuahua owners ignore the socialization aspect with their little dog, I guess because on some level they don't take their little dog's needs seriously. But if you just dress up your teacup chi in adorable clothes, more people will be drawn to him/her and that can really help with the socialization process so you don't end up with one of those psycho mini chihuahua terrors on your hands! haha!
